Basic Data Communication and Networks

Basic Data Communication and Networks Data communication is a process of electronically transferring data from one place to another. The data can be transferred using different means. The data is a collection of raw data figures. It can consist of text, graphics, and sound, etc.

Data Communication and Networks

An electromagnetic signal or wave used to transmit data from one place to another is called a signal. The propagation of signals through a means of communication is called signaling. The communication of data from one place to another place in the form of signals is called transmission.

Basic elements of data communication:

The following components are necessary for a successful communication to take place:

1. Shipping device:

A device that sends the message is called a sending device. It is also called a source or transmitter. The sending device can be a computer, a fax or a mobile phone, etc. The computer is usually used to send the device in a communication system.

2 Receiving device:

A device that receives the message is called a receiving device. It is also called the sinkhole. The receiving device can be a computer, a printer, a fax or a mobile phone, etc. Generally, a computer is used to receive the device in the communication system.

3. Communication devices:

The communication devices are used to transmit messages between the sending and receiving device through the communication means. Communication devices for sending and receiving devices for communication. Two communication devices most commonly used are the modem and the network card

Transmission medium:

The transmission medium is used to transport messages from one place to another. It is also called the communication channel. The transmission medium can be a physical cable or a wireless connection.

Types of communications:

  • There are two types of communication that can be used in data transmission:

1. Communication-based on cables:

A type of communication in which data is transmitted from one device to another using a physical means of transmission is called cable-based communication. The different physical media are twisted pair cable, coaxial cable and fiber optic cable. It requires the installation of cables and the connection of different devices with the cables.

Wireless communication:

A type of communication in which data is transmitted from one device to another using a wireless transmission medium is called wireless communication. The different wireless media are radio waves, microwave and infrared, etc. Wireless communication is more convenient than cable communication.

Properties of the good communication system:

The important properties of a good data communication system are the following:

1. Delivery:

The communication system must deliver data to the correct destination. A good communication system ensures that the data is received by the device or the intended user.

2. Accuracy:

Accuracy is an important property of a good communication system. The communication system must deliver data accurately. There must be no alteration or loss of data during transmission. Altered or incorrect data is useless.

3. Punctuality:

The communication system must deliver data within time. Data can become useless if it is not delivered on time.
